The company later known as the Mistborn began in 8722 SE as a band of Crimson Company members operating across the Skyre Islands. After the death of Mist in 8723 SE, the survivors adopted her name for the company and continued through the Asnor Succession War of 8723 SE, the struggle over the Teeth of Sekorath, and their pursuit of Zurath’ek.
Opening Contracts
In Siraver 8722 SE, Cap Tan Ro’geers, Gobbles, Mist, and Whittaker Morganna left Vrungend for Fellstrond to investigate attacks on farms and travelers. During the voyage they fought Sahuagin raiders and discovered a relic connected to Sekorath, an ancient predatory power of the sea. Near Fellstrond they tracked a two-headed giant and its wolves, captured the creature, and negotiated an arrangement intended to make it useful to the local settlement rather than simply killing it.
Their next voyage produced one of the company’s most enduring possessions. After fighting raiders on a small island, they found the enchanted ship Vatyrnar, which accepted Whittaker as its attuned captain. Soon afterward they rescued a surviving Sahuagin from a scene of violence at sea and learned that factions among the Sahuagin were searching for old relics associated with Sekorath.
The company then traveled through Hagvik and inland to the tower of Nozur, a dwarven wizard whose apprentice Nerri had disappeared along with several constructs sent to find her. The search led to a cavern in which Nerri had accidentally drawn a community of fungal people into Kor Sirok and become entangled in a conflict with subterranean giants. The Mistborn returned Nerri to Nozur, defeated the creatures preventing the displaced people from leaving, and helped send them home.
The Teeth and Bregentved
Back in Vrungend, the company learned that relics known as the Teeth of Sekorath had once been held in the Stadtholder’s vaults and were again moving through the islands. At the same time, they were asked to investigate the lost Mantle of Rektesh, believed by some traditions to have disappeared on Inis Cailean. These two searches would shape much of the following year.
In Garver, the company reached Bregentved and found the settlement overgrown, sickened, and wrapped in a foul mist. Removing inhabitants from the affected area immediately improved many of them, leading the group to search the surrounding wetlands. Guided in part through Whittaker’s devotion to Amundala, they found an abandoned estate and a fortified lake occupied by reptilian cultists serving a black dragon. The Mistborn killed the dragon and broke its hold over the region. The creature would later be recovered and transformed by Zurath’ek, becoming the aberrant dragon called the Black Echo.
Whittaker’s Exoneration
Whittaker had been sent to the Crimson Company after being framed for preparing forged documents in support of a rival claim against Ornolf Varsson. The group eventually returned secretly to Lidviken to discover who had benefited from his removal. Their investigation focused on Johan Seyler, the Skald who had replaced Whittaker.
Gobbles followed Seyler into an abandoned house once associated with Bodvar Egilsson and discovered a hidden shaft leading into the caverns beneath the city. Exploring those passages, the company found evidence of a small cerebral parasite linked to aberrant activity deeper underground. The marks made by the creature matched evidence at the house, while testimony recovered from Bodvar’s remains placed Seyler in Lidviken before Whittaker’s fall.
When Seyler next appeared at the house, the Mistborn pursued him and moved to rescue Whittaker’s wife Aisling and daughter Saoise from confinement. Seyler was killed during the escape, exposing the parasite that had been using him. The group was arrested but brought before Ornolf with enough evidence to overturn Whittaker’s conviction. Whittaker was exonerated and made Jarl of Bregentved. He and his companions began investing their wealth in restoring the town.
Death of Mist
Early in 8723 SE, the company crossed the interior of Inis Faerna and escorted frightened inhabitants of the Polverth Plateau back to Dewlight. There they learned that unnatural thunder, red lightning, dead wildlife, and violent shapeshifters were spreading through the region. The disturbance centered on the Pool of Eternal Spring to the north, a sanctuary associated with Lurae, a unicorn servant of Amundala. The attacks were tied to followers of Malvar, a predatory servant of Phaethos who exalted violent transformation and the hunt.
The company left Dewlight for the Pool, freed captives held by a hag in the surrounding forest, and reached the sanctuary the following day. There they fought lycanthropes while red lightning transformed Lurae into a corrupted version of herself. The company broke the attack and preserved the unicorn, but Mist died in the battle. They returned to Dewlight with his body before continuing toward Cain Tiarnach.
His companions carried his body to Cain Tiarnach. An attempt to restore him to life failed, and he was buried beneath the trees. Shortly afterward the surviving company encountered the Dantari scholar Sazed, who joined them. The group thereafter became known as the Mistborn in memory of their fallen companion.
Sashara and the Forty Teeth
While sailing toward Inis Cailean, the Mistborn encountered an island absent from their charts. It proved to be the back of an enormous ancient shelled sea-beast carrying an elven-appearing woman named Sashara. Sashara revealed herself as a servant of Maritana and explained that Sekorath was not a true god but an ancient predatory power that had once claimed the surrounding seas.
According to Sashara, Sekorath had been banished or otherwise removed from the waters of Kor Sirok, but forty relics connected to him remained. The Skyre Folk had once watched over these objects, only for war and political upheaval to scatter them. A militant Sahuagin cult was now attempting to collect the Teeth of Sekorath and use them to enable Sekorath’s return.
Nozur and the Nharvek
The company returned through Hagvik and found both the region and Nozur’s tower damaged by recent attacks. A tunnel beneath the tower led into a hidden complex where several Nharvek arcanists had been operating. The Mistborn found evidence of experimentation, teleportation chambers, and prisoners before locating Nozur in the custody of the aberrations. They killed several of the Nharvek and rescued the wizard, although the most powerful arcanist present escaped.
The discovery helped connect several earlier mysteries. The parasite beneath Lidviken, later events at Hammerheim, and the eventual emergence of Zurath’ek all pointed toward a network of Nharvek activity beneath the Skyre Islands rather than a series of unrelated threats.
Bregentved and the College Arcanum
Returning to Bregentved, the Mistborn found the town recovering rapidly under Whittaker’s patronage. Representatives of the College Arcanum and Ornolf Varsson’s court arrived to negotiate the establishment of a permanent academy. The talks were attacked by hired assassins, but the company captured one of them and learned that the attack had been intended to stop the agreement. The academy was approved and became the first durable center of formal arcane instruction accepted within Asnorland.
The company continued treating Bregentved as its principal base, restoring a keep, supporting a temple, and establishing local businesses. The town’s winter feast became one of the few extended periods of ordinary civic life recorded during a campaign increasingly dominated by war.
Recovery of the Mantle
In Yilaver 8723 SE, the Mistborn sailed for Inis Cailean in search of the Mantle of Rektesh. Their voyage included further clashes with the Sahuagin and eventually led through the ruins of Lundarbrekka into a concealed warm valley occupied by Skyre Folk led by Yolara. From them the company learned traditions surrounding the destruction of the old Asnor settlement and the generations of conflict that had followed.
A deeper cavern contained remains associated with the earliest Asnor presence on the island and an ancient proving ground devoted to Rektesh. Cap entered the challenge alone and defeated the guardian placed before him. The Mantle appeared afterward and accepted him as its bearer.
The artifact immediately changed the political significance of Cap’s claim during the developing succession crisis. Ornolf Varsson urged the group to take the Mantle to the temple of Rektesh in Vrungend so that its authenticity and Cap’s worthiness could be tested publicly.
The Asnor Succession War
The Mistborn entered an increasingly repressive Vrungend in disguise. After Cap’s formal challenge to Ulrik Lindvig failed to produce a decisive confrontation, Lindvig escaped through shadow magic. Whittaker then stirred a popular uprising while Cap, Gobbles, and Sazed infiltrated the palace and freed imprisoned members of the Crimson Company, including Kodiak Popo. The group retook the inner keep, recovered the Mantle from Séamus Lorcáin, and captured Lorcáin and one of Lindvig’s principal allies.
Cap’s coalition subsequently gained support from multiple Thegns and from Skyre Folk allies. The campaign included the Siege of Aalund and ended its principal military phase at Hammerheim. There the coalition found the defenses abandoned, ships drifting with dead crews, and a Nharvek facility beneath the castle. The Mistborn rescued prisoners, killed a Nharvek arcanist, and found Ulrik mentally destroyed by the consequences of his alliance with the aberrations. His journal identified a Nharvek leader named Zurath’ek and described a pact made in 8722 SE after miners beneath Hammerheim disturbed something connected to the Nharvek.
Cap was formally installed as Stadtholder on Rekven, 17th of Zacaver, 8723 SE. The ceremony is described in Installation of the Stadtholder.
Hunt for Zurath’ek
The end of the succession war did not end the Nharvek threat. Research identified Zurath’ek as an ancient Nharvek arcanist experimenting with undeath, identity, and methods of apotheosis. The Mistborn also learned that Flow, Mist’s abducted wife, was being compelled to work on a structure marked with aberrant symbols.
Following information from the subterranean settlement of Dulthapplas, the group located an old ziggurat associated with Zurath’ek. They penetrated the structure, fought the Nharvek, and forced Zurath’ek to flee. Refugees from the surrounding complex were brought to the surface and eventually to Bregentved. Flow was among those recovered, and the Mistborn later took her to Mist’s burial place before she settled in Bregentved.
The Temple of Sekorath
By Siraver 8723, divinations indicated that the Sahuagin cult possessed thirty-five of the forty Teeth of Sekorath while the Mistborn and their allies controlled the remaining five. Sashara could identify the cult’s submerged temple only indirectly, so Sazed sought help from the Great Library on Danto. Research there placed the temple at the bottom of the Ogestead Gulf.
The Mistborn sailed to the gulf aboard Vatyrnar, descended into a deep trench, and located the temple. They returned with the Teeth and a tablet requiring translation by the priesthood of Rektesh.
The Sahuagin soon struck back. Bregentved was partly evacuated while the Mistborn fortified the temple in which the Teeth were held. A Sahuagin priestess breached the defenses, but the attackers were defeated and the relics remained in the company’s possession.
Theft of the Teeth
As Asnor leaders, College Arcanum representatives, and Skyre Folk gathered in Bregentved to decide what should be done with the Teeth, an enormous draconic aberration smashed through the wall of the inn where Gobbles was staying. It stole the extradimensional container holding the relics and escaped despite Sazed’s attempt to pursue it.
The creature was later identified as the Black Echo, a Nharvek-altered resurrection of the black dragon the Mistborn had killed near Bregentved in 8722. The theft made clear that Zurath’ek intended to use the Teeth for a purpose beyond restoring Sekorath.
The Apotheosis Attempt at Cinderfold
The Mistborn traveled to the Great Library and consulted records of earlier attempts at apotheosis. They learned that such rituals often depended upon unusual celestial alignments, physical sites shaped by heat or deep geological activity, and components whose destruction could destabilize the entire working. The College Arcanum established magical and seismic observation points across the islands, and the Mistborn personally replaced a missing team on Glydd Goch before the search narrowed to the volcanic region known as Cinderfold.
Inside Cinderfold’s lava tubes, the company encountered psychic disturbances and eventually fought the Black Echo, recovering the container that had held the Teeth. Deeper underground they found a purpose-built ritual complex aligned with the moons. Each of the forty Teeth had been mounted into the structure surrounding Zurath’ek.
The Mistborn attacked before the ritual could be completed. Gobbles destroyed part of the framework supporting the Teeth, weakening the protection around Zurath’ek. During the battle the Nharvek took the Mantle of Rektesh from Cap. Gobbles was killed, but his companions restored him to life after Zurath’ek escaped by planar magic with the Mantle to the Realm of Winds.
As Gobbles died, he perceived a fragment of Zurath’ek’s departure: the sensation of rain and a metallic taste like copper. Zurath’ek relocated to the Realm of Winds, carrying the Mantle with him. Accounts of the immediate aftermath mention unexplained time distortion, but the later resolution of the pursuit is unknown.
