Ulrik Lindvig was the Thegn of Inis Markul and the principal rival claimant during the Asnor Succession War of 8723 SE. Before the war he was widely considered the wealthiest of the Asnor Thegns. Inis Markul’s copper and gem production gave him exceptional financial resources, and his ability to pay mercenaries well extended his military reach beyond the forces traditionally owed by his own Jarls.
Ulrik had long been suspected of espionage and political treachery, although those suspicions had not produced proof sufficient to remove him from office. After Thorgest Iarlsson was poisoned, Séamus Lorcáin asserted that Thorgest had named Ulrik as his intended successor and produced documents supporting the claim. Several other nobles, including Ornolf Varsson, regarded those documents as forged and believed Lorcáin and Lindvig were acting together.
The succession struggle quickly became open war. Forces from Inis Markul occupied territory beyond Ulrik’s own Thegndom, including Inis Olsang, while Ulrik’s supporters secured control of Vrungend. When the Mistborn returned to the capital with Cap Tan Ro’geers bearing the Mantle of Rektesh, Ulrik was challenged and defeated. He escaped Vrungend and fled back to Inis Markul rather than being captured there.
Ulrik continued resistance from his home island. A journal recovered at Hammerheim later revealed that he had entered into a pact with the Nharvek arcanist Zurath’ek in 8722 SE after activity beneath the city exposed a Nharvek site. The surviving entries do not preserve the full terms of the bargain, but the alliance eventually brought an active Nharvek facility beneath Hammerheim itself.
When Cap’s coalition reached the city, its ships and defenses had already collapsed and Ulrik was found alive but mentally ruined. He was taken into custody and imprisoned at Hammerheim. His capture removed the principal military claimant opposing Cap and allowed the succession crisis to end with Cap’s installation as Stadtholder.
