Notes

Assad is a Liyonir warrior in exile whose family was displaced after his uncle Azure murdered Assad’s father and took control of their people. Assad’s mother, Saza, preserved traditions concerning Azukhan and the ancestral weapon Razekah, the Name-Eating Blade. She came to believe that recovering the blade could give Assad both the legitimacy and the power needed to confront Azure, although Assad has repeatedly distinguished that obligation from a simple desire to rule.

He shares a close familial bond with Dizra, who has remained one of his strongest supporters. Assad has in turn acted as an anchor for Dizra as dreams, psionic changes, and the influence of Visthuun became more pronounced. During the exploration of the Cliffside Temple, Assad claimed a lightning-charged khopesh recovered after the activation of one of the site’s ancient planar engines.

The search for Razekah eventually carried the Drakefire Phalanx into the Swamps of Thunder and the ancient sky-pyramid Thunderwake. There Assad learned that the site preserved traditions associated with Huraz, Azukhan, and a conflict in which Visthuun had once been opposed. After the party defeated Muqaddasat al-Qurbān, the last guardian of Thunderwake’s hidden sanctuary, Assad recovered Razekah from its pedestal.

During the return journey, Assad experienced a vivid encounter with Azukhan beneath impossible stars. Azukhan refused to declare him fully worthy merely because the blade had accepted him and warned that inheritance and fear could not make a people belong to a ruler. Assad emerged from the encounter with the understanding that Razekah would test rather than simply validate him, and that confronting Azure would require him to decide what kind of leader he intended to become.
