The Swamps of Thunder are a broad region of jungle, marsh, brackish waterways, and rain-lashed islands on the southern Drakefire Peninsula. The region is difficult to navigate from the surface, with dense vegetation, shifting channels, unusual wildlife, and storms that can make ordinary landmarks unreliable.
The name is associated with Thunderwake, an immense fallen sky-pyramid hidden deep within the region. Thunder from the structure can seem directionless above water but becomes easier to locate when heard beneath the surface, a property the Drakefire Phalanx used during its 2026 expedition.
The surrounding ecosystem contains several unusual adaptations. Travelers have reported highly camouflaged birds, dam-building fish, unusually intelligent primates, and plant growth capable of magically compelling living creatures to join stationary masses of vines and flowers. Some of these traits may be natural responses to the difficult environment, while others may be connected to ancient magic associated with Thunderwake.
Ancient Liyonir military objects and other ruins found along the route to the pyramid indicate that the region once saw more organized activity than its modern isolation suggests.
