The Dantari are an elephantine people most strongly associated with the island nation of Danto in the Mitan Sea. For much of recorded history, Danto remained comparatively isolated from the surrounding continents, allowing Dantari communities there to develop with relatively little outside political interference. Modern Dantari can also be encountered elsewhere in Kor Sirok, particularly in ports and other places connected to Danto by trade, scholarship, religion, or travel.
The best-documented Dantari traditions are those of Danto. Communities established elsewhere have developed their own languages, religions, political loyalties, and customs.
Appearance
Dantari are large humanoids with distinctly elephantine features, including trunks, broad ears, and heavy builds. Individual appearance varies, but the ancestry is immediately recognizable even among people unfamiliar with Danto. Their trunks are capable of fine movement and form an ordinary part of gesture, work, and daily interaction.
Their size and trunks influence the design of clothing, tools, furniture, vehicles, and architecture in communities with substantial Dantari populations.
Danto
The strongest concentration of Dantari population is found on Danto, a volcanic island near the center of the Mitan Sea. Long periods of relative geographic and political separation shaped much of the island’s history, but modern Danto is better characterized by non-interventionism than isolation. Dantari settlements spread across the island, and many are built in ways that fit closely into existing slopes, vegetation, and terrain, so travelers unfamiliar with Danto can pass near villages or Oghmian monasteries without immediately recognizing the scale of habitation.
Pakuley, on the island’s southern shore near the mouth of the Ondulux River, developed into Danto’s principal city and national capital. Danto is one of the comparatively few representative democracies in Kor Sirok, governed through the elected Sabha of Danto and the Pradhan of Danto chosen from among its members. The nearby Great Library is the largest mortal library known on Kor Sirok and reflects the strong scholarly, religious, and storytelling traditions present in many Dantari communities.
Devotion to Thar Oghmus is especially influential on Danto without forming the basis of clerical government. Oghmian institutions advise, preserve records, and gather knowledge while avoiding formal political authority. Dantari travelers, scholars, merchants, monks, soldiers, and adventurers can be encountered far beyond the island, and Danto has intervened abroad when its representatives concluded that events posed a sufficiently serious wider threat.
Modern Dantari
Most people elsewhere in Kor Sirok associate the Dantari closely with Danto because the island remains their best-known population center. Dantari communities abroad often retain ties to the island through trade, scholarship, religion, family, or travel, while developing within the political and cultural traditions of their own homelands.
Danto’s Great Library and Oghmian monasteries have given Dantari a widespread reputation for contemplation, scholarship, and religious learning, especially among foreigners whose contact with them comes through scholars, monks, and travelers from the island.
