Chan Kong-Sang was a monk of the Leopard Song Order, a member of the Brass Blades from 8751 SE until 8753 SE, and the eventual successor to Yuen Lung as Djozan of the Leopard Song. His journey with the Blades began after he fled the Order rather than obey commands that would have required him to kill his own father.
The Leopard Song Order
Chan was his parents’ only child. While he was still young, they placed him in the care of the Leopard Song Order in the Kenai Mountains. The monastery became his home, though Chan privately wondered whether his parents had entrusted him to the monks because they could not care for him or because they simply did not want him.
Yuen Lung, Djozan of the Leopard Song, became an important mentor to Chan. Chan revered him and grew up believing that the Order existed to preserve discipline, tradition, and the well-being of its people. That understanding began to collapse as the figure then known as Hiuh Lao gained influence over Yuen and the Leopard Song. Hiuh Lao was actually Dhuulan Havar, who used magic and devices supplied through Zhaken Amberheart to manipulate the Order and eventually much of the wider Djozanate system.
Under that influence, the Leopard Song became increasingly militarized. Recruits were pressured to sever loyalties that might compete with obedience to the Order. Chan was eventually commanded to prove himself by killing his own father. He refused and fled the monastery.
Joining the Brass Blades
A vision or spiritual prompting sent Chan north toward Tadrium in search of something that might help restore peaceful self-government and the traditions he believed the Leopard Song had abandoned. He reached Trinswood in 8751 SE and became caught up in the lycanthrope attack that also brought together the surviving and future members of the reforged Brass Blades.
Chan remained with the company as its pursuit of Luther Mortanas and Zhaken expanded far beyond Elgaard. The Blades’ discoveries eventually led back to the Kenai Mountains, where refugees and military aggression made it clear that Chan’s homeland had fallen even further under Hiuh Lao’s control.
Return to the Kenai Mountains
By the time the Blades returned to the Kenai, Tusky had become keeper of the Clockwork Heart. The artifact could disrupt the synchronization magic underlying the devices Zhaken had provided to Dhuulan, allowing people affected by the system to break free of its reinforcing influence.
The Blades rescued Ip Cham, Djozan of the Bear Paw Order, and worked with the Bear Paw and Eagle Wing to build a resistance. After weakening the Grand Army of the Djozanates, they infiltrated the Leopard Song monastery and defeated Hiuh Lao, exposing him as Dhuulan Havar.
Freed from the manipulation that had shaped his recent actions, Yuen Lung named Chan his successor. Chan accepted but promised to return to lead the Order only after his journey with the Brass Blades was complete. Yuen then transferred the secret religious knowledge carried by the Djozans to Chan. The covenant governing that succession caused Yuen to die when the transfer was finished.
Djozan
Chan remained with the Brass Blades through the Harrowing. After the crisis ended, he left the company and returned to the Kenai Mountains to assume leadership of the Leopard Song Order. He inherited an institution that had been turned against its own traditions and a region still recovering from years of manipulation, war, and displacement.
