Abendigo of Lochsmald was a deep gnome wizard, member of the Brass Blades, and the mortal who later became the god of time. His study of temporal magic began as an attempt to undo the murder of his family and eventually drew him into the Rift Spar, the Harrowing, and an exceptional closed sequence of events surrounding his own apotheosis.
Early Life
Abendigo grew up in the farming community of Lochsmald. His family had escaped enslavement under House Glannath, the third house of Olath Belanore, while he was still a child. He remembered the dangerous passage out of the Underdark, his infant brother carried by their father, and the injuries his parents bore from their captivity.
An elderly human wizard named Rof Riverflame helped the family settle near Lochsmald and recognized unusual magical talent in Abendigo. Rof offered to take him as an apprentice, but Abendigo’s parents refused. Their experience under House Glannath had left them deeply suspicious of arcane power and what it might do to their child.
Abendigo practiced anyway. By seven he could perform simple magic in secret, and his ability continued to grow without formal training.
When Abendigo was fourteen, a winged demon descended on Lochsmald and devastated the settlement. The creature killed Abendigo’s brother, sister, mother, and father in front of him. Rof intervened before Abendigo could be killed as well and attempted to banish the creature. Acting by instinct, Abendigo mirrored Rof’s magic. Their combined effort drove the demon away, but Abendigo collapsed and remained unconscious for seven days.
Rof initially tried to honor the wishes of Abendigo’s parents by refusing to teach him. He soon concluded that the boy’s power would continue developing with or without guidance and that leaving him untrained would be more dangerous. Abendigo became his apprentice.
The attack fixed the purpose that shaped much of Abendigo’s mortal life. He became determined to understand magic well enough to reach backward through time and prevent his family’s deaths.
The Brass Blades
Abendigo was in Trinswood in 8751 SE when the inn there was attacked by lycanthropes. The incident brought him together with Davrek Valzorwyn, Phelps, Chan Kong-Sang, Tusky, and Darieth Ariessus, forming the core of the rebuilt Brass Blades.
His pursuit of temporal magic soon became entangled with the company’s wider investigations. Beneath Krynhold, Abendigo and Davrek experienced visions associated with an entity from the Nascent Expanse. At Nmothusin, the Blades recovered the Rift Spar from an extraplanar space reached through the town well.
Believing he could use the artifact to stop plans already in motion by Zhaken Amberheart, Abendigo later took the Rift Spar to Mount Caraphat, one of the ancient works supporting the Twilight Veil. His attempt instead destroyed the installation and weakened the Veil in the region. The failure became one of several ways the Blades’ attempts to prevent a future disaster became part of the chain of events that produced it.
The Road to Time
After the Blades reached the Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga, Abendigo obtained an object that opened a door to Morgrom. The company passed through it into a hall of the Returning Flame, where they met the door-maker Azarek. Their search then carried them through the deepest reaches of the Eightfold Depths and to Numedios.
There Abendigo learned how to reach Giotractuszeit, a time dragon whose lair the Blades understood only as the end of time. They did not know that the place they reached lay within the Broken Hour. Giotractuszeit taught Abendigo the basis of a ritual capable of opening a passage through time.
The ritual did not allow Abendigo to rewrite his history. When he and the Brass Blades eventually traveled through the temporal opening, their actions became part of the same history from which they had departed. His family was not restored in a revised present, and the effort to prevent their deaths instead became part of a closed sequence involving his future divine self, the Rift Spar, Othrazhul, and the Harrowing.
Apotheosis
During the final confrontation of the Harrowing, the Brass Blades defeated the Aspect of Othrazhul. Davrek then drove the Rift Spar into the Aspect, destroying the manifestation and forcing Othrazhul back beyond Creation at the cost of Davrek’s life.
The Rift Spar survived the release. It fell from the collapsing manifestation and struck Abendigo like a meteor. The resulting eruption of temporal and metaphysical force transformed him into the god of time.
Abendigo’s mortal quest therefore ended without the victory he had originally sought. He did not erase the tragedy at Lochsmald or create a new history in which his family survived. Instead, the effort to change that past led him through the events that gave him a unique relationship with time and ultimately made him divine.
