The Deceiver’s Key is a powerful artifact associated with Kalabold and traditions of theft, deception, and transgression. Accounts preserved in Arkrist claim that the notorious thief Cozelach once acquired the Key after following divine whispers into the city’s underworld and used it during several extraordinary thefts before his capture.
The artifact later became the central objective of The Voiceless, whose rituals were intended to restore or recover it as part of their attempt to free the shadow dragon Xumanon. Their leader, Guzzax, successfully manifested and used the Key during the final stages of the cult’s plan.
After Guzzax was killed, Flutter recovered the artifact and used it to deactivate mechanisms associated with Xumanon’s prison. The Key later passed to Quill, who has used it as a highly effective means of bypassing locks and sealed mechanisms during the Drakefire Phalanx’s expeditions.
The artifact appears to respond not only to physical locks but to the idea of prohibited access more broadly. Its full limits, the degree to which Kalabold remains aware of its use, and whether wielding it exposes the bearer to the god’s influence are not fully understood.
